Living in a rent control building means that your rent can only be raised by a certain amount per year. The San Francisco rent control law covers most rental properties in the city, constructed before June 1979. Also, some types of housing like subsidized housing; dormitory or residential hotels are not covered by rent control. Single family homes are not fully covered by rent control law either but again there are some exceptions. In San Mateo county, there is no rent control law.
If the rent control law does not cover you, your rent can be increased by any amount, at any time, as long as your landlord gives you a 30 or 60-day notice.
If you need more detailed information about rent control you can also visit the San Francisco Rent Board website at http://www.sfrb.org to find more information, contact information and office hours.
The board can also assist you in filling out a petition and provide you assistance in case of a rent increase or eviction.
